Art Displays

January: Hampstead Middle School 8th Grade Students

Art by the Hampstead Middle School 8th graders, inspired by the artist Jill Petro, are on display this month.  This art project  combines illustration with graphing data sets to represent climate change In a more visual way.

Dear Viewer,
This student art collection was inspired by artist and science communicator, Jill Pelto. Her work
focuses on communicating environmental and human connections through art. She incorporates data
directly into her art and illustrates what the data is describing. Art is such an important and powerful
tool to communicate difficult concepts, such as climate change. Data and graphs alone can be hard to
connect with, but art has the power to evoke emotions in people. When people feel connected to
science through art, the visual story created, it can inspire more action.
8 th grade students at Hampstead Middle School created their own art pieces inspired by Jill Pelto’s
art, as a final project for their human impacts and climate unit. Each student had to select a data set that
addressed a real-world issue related to climate change. From there, students had to create an
illustration that not only related to the information conveyed in their data, but also creatively
incorporated the graph in their art.
The students worked incredibly hard on their art pieces. We hope you not only enjoy them, but
that you learn something new about the world around you!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Murzic’s 8 th Grade Science Class
