September & October: Kristen Detonni

Kristen Dettoni is an accomplished artist and textile designer living in southern New Hampshire. She received her BFA from Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She spent most of her career working at textile mills, designing patterns for woven fabrics. She loves the challenge of coming up with new ideas and working in a variety of mediums. Kristen developed the first sustainable upholstery woven fabrics for office furniture and automotive interiors, and was awarded a patent for automotive suspension seating. She is the recipient of the 2020 HIP Award and Metropolis Likes for her patterned Cryptology collection and has received several juried awards for her artwork based on cryptology. For Kristen, there is no separation between art and industry. Her creativity is fed by both, working between extreme restrictions and boundless opportunities.

Join Kristen for a Bookmaking Craft Class (RSVP Required) on Tuesday, September 23rd at 6pm. Then on Tuesday, October 28th at 6:30pm she'll discusses her inspiration behind her cryptology designs and artwork with hidden meaning. Learn about fiber art, how it was created, and the techniques she uses to create messages.

Some of Kristen's work was inspired by the book The Woman Who Smashed Codes by Jason Fagone, which our Nonfiction Book Club is reading and discussing on Tuesday, October 7th at 1pm. Copies of the book are avaialble at the library, and all are welcome to join the conversation!

Our Third Thursday book club is also reading books on codebreakers. Join in to discuss The Rose Code by Kate Quinn on Thursday, October 16th at 1pm. Copies of the book are available to check out at the library.

To continue our month of codebreaking, we'll also be screening The Amateur, a 2025 movie about a CIA decoder, on Friday, October 3rd at 1pm and The Imitation Game, a 2014 biography about Nazi code breaker Alan Turing, on Friday, October 17th at 1pm
